Kia has released new pictures and details about the facelifted Carnival, ahead of its launch in South Korea later this month.
Starting outside, the minivan adopts a fresh Opposites United design that “combines refined sophistication and SUV-like strength.” The biggest changes occur up front, where the Carnival has a larger grille and a more upright fascia. They’re joined by new headlights, which sport a vertical design as well as “Star Map” daytime running lights.
The styling changes continue out back as there are new taillights with vertical elements. Buyers will also find a new bumper and a revised liftgate, which eschews the previous handle for a cleaner appearance.
Customers looking for something more unique can opt for the new Gravity package (or trim), which embraces a dark aesthetic. As part of the makeover, the van is equipped with a unique grille, black side steps, dark metal accents, and exclusive 19-inch wheels with a black finish.
A Classier Cabin With Subtle Updates
The changes continue inside as we can see a lightly revised dashboard and a floating panoramic curved display. The latter consists of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a matching 12.3-inch infotainment system.
They’re joined by a revised center console, new switchgear, and a rotary shifter. Kia also noted the model now has expanded ambient lighting, a fingerprint authentication system, and a UV-C sterilization box in the center console. Other highlights include an 11-inch head-up display, an Ergo Motion driver’s seat, and a modernized infotainment system that supports over-the-air updates as well as the “Hey Kia” wake word.
Speaking of technology, the van offers an assortment of driver assistance systems including Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Rear Collision Avoidance Assist, and Highway Driving Assist 2. They’re joined by High Beam Assist, Safe Exit Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and Rear Cross-Path Detection.
New Hybrid Powertrain Produces 242 HP And Returns 33 MPG
Under the hood, there’s a new turbocharged 1.6-liter hybrid powertrain, which produces a combined output of 242 hp (180 kW / 245 PS) and 270 lb-ft (367 Nm) of torque. Those are pretty respectable numbers and Kia said the van will have a fuel economy rating of up to 14.0 km/L, which should be around 33 mpg.
Customers will also be able to get a 2.2-liter diesel and a familiar 3.5-liter V6. Kia didn’t say much about these engines, but the latter will apparently continue to produce 290 hp (216 kW / 294 PS).
Speaking of performance, the automaker said the facelifted van has “improved ride comfort and quietness.” These improvements are largely due to new shock absorbers as well as additional sound deadening material.
The Carnival will go up for pre-order tomorrow in South Korea and pricing starts at ₩34.7 million ($26,601).
