The exponential growth of BYD’s family of battery-electric vehicles is showing no signs of abating with confirmation that a new model, the Sea Lion 07, will be unveiled on November 17 at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China.
BYD’s latest model has been teased through a series of sketches that reveal it will be an SUV and form part of the brand’s ‘Ocean’ series that already includes the Seal, Dolphin, and Seagull, hence the Sea Lion name. It is understood that design inspiration has been taken from the Ocean-X sedan concept that BYD launched a couple of years ago which went on to spawn both the Seal sedan and the Seal SUV.
It appears as though the Sea Lion 07 will be noticeably smaller than the Seal SUV and have a slightly cleaner and more well-proportioned design. The design has been led by former Audi and Lamborghini designer Wolfgang Egger and includes a front end with sharp LED headlights and DRLs, similar to those of the Seal. However, whereas the rest of the Seal’s front end is quite flowing and curvaceous, the front of the Seal Lion has much sharper angles and more aggressive air intakes.

A sketch showing the side of the Sea Lion 07 shows a Coupe SUV shape to the BYD’s roof line as well as dramatic curves and creases running along the doors. The side profile reminds us a little of the Cupra Formentor but the cabin of the BYD is pushed further forward. The rear of the Sea Lion 07 adopts similar LED taillights to those of the Atto 3 but much like the front, the rear is quite aggressive with plenty of angles and sharp edges.
Technical specifications about the new model remain a mystery but prices are expected to start at around 190,000 yuan ($26,000), allowing it to undercut the BYD Song L SUV which starts at 220,000 yuan ($30,164).
