Shortly after his fiery crash in a Rimac Concept_One while participating in a Swiss hillclimb event, Richard Hammond has posted a video from his hospital bed joking that he’s “not dead.”
In the clip, the popular presenter from The Grand Tour has his left leg in a brace and said that he will require knee surgery. He also thanked the medical professionals that have helped him, apologized to his family and said that James May visited him in hospital.
“I would like to thank all of the medical professionals who got me by air ambulance from the crash to the hospital and who have dealt with me ever since,” he said.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated with video from the scene showing Hammond losing control of the electric supercar on the entry to a left-hand bend before crashing through a barrier and tumbling down an embankment. He was able to escape just before the car bust into flames.
In a statement following the incident, The Grand Tour said “Richard was conscious and talking, and climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames. He was flown by air ambulance to hospital in St. Gallen to be checked over, revealing a fracture to his knee.”
