Toyota revealed the “Matte Metal” version of the Crown in Japan but it seems that this is only the first of many special editions coming up for the Crown Series. A more rugged version of the hybrid crossover could be next, inspired by the pictured 2023 Toyota Crown Outdoor Concept.
The news was shared during the recent Crown Meeting in Japan where the “Matte Metal” edition was unveiled to the press. During the presentation, Ryutaro Shimizu, Chief Engineer for the Crown series, admitted that Toyota wants to make more special editions based on the recently expanded Crown family. As reported by Car Watch Impress, Shimizu added that he wants Toyota to sell products similar to the Crown Outdoor Concept, with a photo of it appearing in the presentation.
This doesn’t confirm anything but at least shows us what the automaker has in mind about an off-road-themed version of the Crown. This could be either based on the Crossover, the Sport (SUV), or the Estate (Signia) bodystyles, since the sedan is not compatible with such modifications.

The Crown Outdoor Concept was introduced in January 2023 at the Tokyo Outdoor Show. Despite the cool modifications, it went largely unnoticed due to Toyota’s wide and diverse concept lineup for the Tokyo Auto Salon. According to the official spec sheet, the concept has an increased ride height compared to the stock version. While the hybrid crossover is no off-roader, the extra ground clearance could improve its capabilities in combination with the all-terrain tires (265/60R18) wrapped around a new set of 18-inch wheels.
The adventurous concept is accentuated by the bold-on wide fender extensions, the aluminum skid plates, and the extra LED bars mounted on the nose and on the roof. Other upgrades include the tow hooks and the red mudguards. Finally, an aftermarket roof rack made of aluminum expands the cargo-carrying capabilities of the Crown Crossover.
Ryutaro Shimizu also revealed that Toyota has more than 100 ideas for special editions, incorporating customer feedback. The special editions of the Crown Series will likely be available via Toyota’s new Crown-dedicated flagship dealerships in Japan. Overseas availability is still unknown.
