Authorities in the United Kingdom have published shocking footage that shows the journey of a drunk driver as captured by her dashcam.
The video shows Louise Willard from Bexhill in East Sussex driving at speeds of almost 80 mph (128 km/h) along the motorway and coming close to crashing on a number of occasions.
Later in the video, Willard is seen running over a curb while trying to navigate a roundabout and shockingly, seen swerving down small English streets at 51 mph (82 km/h) and coming within inches of crashing into various roadworks.
Willard’s eventual journey eventually came to an abrupt end when she smashed into the rear of a parked Audi at 37 mph (59 km/h). A member of the public then spotted the 41-year-old reversing and driving away from the scene and quickly alerted the police.
Never drink and drive
The teacher was arrested and found to be more than two and a half times over the legal drink driving limit. She has been disqualified from driving for 24 months, sentenced to a 12-month community order that requires 150 hours of unpaid work and forced to pay 170 pounds ($232) in costs and fines.
Speaking to Independent, Nathan Langley from the Polegate Roads Policing Unit says the footage perfectly depicts the horrors of driving under the influence.
“The dangers of drink-driving are well-documented – it can seriously impair your reaction times, concentration levels, and judgement of other road users and hazards. But a lot of people may find this difficult to visualise.
“Now, through the release of this footage, we can show you exactly what it looks like to drive under the influence of alcohol, and you can see just how shocking it is,” Langley said.
