You probably ought to take this news with a pinch of salt the size of the sodium mountain needed to keep Michigan’s roads clear each winter, but a report from Korea says Hyundai is putting the N Vision 74 concept into production.

Production in this case doesn’t mean it’s going to be churning the things out by the thousand, sadly. The story from Korea’s ETNews claims Hyundai will build 100 examples of the retro coupe, which was inspired by the original stillborn Pony coupe Giugiaro penned in 1974. Of those 100 mooted cars, 70 will allegedly be offered to customers, with the remaining 30 being used for motorsport.

The report says that the build process gets underway in 2026, with each of the cars making a solid 800 metric ponies (789 hp). If that’s true the production cars will be considerably more powerful than the concept, which generated 335 hp (340 PS) from each of its two rear-mounted electric motors, and used a 114 hp (116 PS) fuel cell stack as an on-board charger.

While the power output of the production coupe has allegedly grown, the Korean report suggest that the driving range has gone the other way. Hyundai claimed 373 miles (600 km) of range for the concept, but the street car is said to manage only 250-310 miles (400-500 km) on a full charge.

We’ve heard stories before about Hyundai planning to put the concept into production, and equally we’ve heard reports to the contrary, including from the automaker itself. But the N brand’s credibility might now be strong enough that there’s a viable business case for building a small run. A small run with a big price, that is. If – and it’s a big if – there’s any truth to this ETNews story you can bet that the production coupe will cost close to supercar money. And that’s something that would have seemed laughable a decade ago.
