Ride-hailing giant Lyft, together with self-driving and connected tech supplier Aptiv have agreed to a deal that will see a fleet of 30 self-driving vehicles take to the streets of Las Vegas.
Starting this week, users will be able to hail an Aptiv-equipped autonomous car using Lyft’s mobile app, and travel to and from “high-demand locations”, as reported by Autonews.
“The resulting knowledge and data will allow us to further refine our autonomous driving capabilities and strengthen our portfolio of industry-leading active safety solutions,” said Aptiv CEO, Kevin Clark in a statement.
The two companies previously teamed up to bring a bunch of self-driving cars at the Consumer Electronics Show this past January, in order to demonstrate the capabilities of their technology. Those cars however were only programmed to take riders to a limited number of destinations around Las Vegas, and a so-called safety driver was always present.
Of course, the best part of Aptiv’s autonomous driving tech is the fact that their sensors are fully integrated into the car’s design, which paints a much prettier picture, as opposed to having all those digital eyeballs sticking out.
Aptiv has also reported a 40% gain in first-quarter income compared to last year, with the number now hitting $307 million. This increase occurred thanks to strong gains in South America.
