The most famous Jeep Wrangler impersonator from India just got a bit more desirable thanks to a new special edition. The Mahindra Thar Earth Edition is the new flagship version of the off-roader, adding a few unique styling touches inside-out inspired by the desert.
Starting with the exterior, the Mahindra Thar Earth Edition is exclusively available in a satin matte “Desert Fury” shade which is combined with decals on the profile, black Mahindra emblems, and special Earth badging on the B-pillars. Furthermore, the slits on the grille are also finished in Desert Fury, contrasting the black surround. As with other versions of the Thar, the special edition rides on 18-inch alloy wheels shod in all-terrain tires.

Inside, the seats are upholstered in beige synthetic leather with a dune-inspired pattern embossed on the headrests. The inserts around the climate vents match the color of the exterior, while a special VIN plaque is mounted on the left side of the dashboard.
The Earth Edition is available with either a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine producing 150 hp (112 kW / 152 PS), or a 2.2-liter diesel producing 130 hp (97 kW / 132 PS). In both cases, power is transmitted to all four wheels via a manual or an automatic gearbox. Note that the Mahindra Thar is also available in RWD form, but the Earth Edition only comes in 4WD flavor.
Predictably, the Mahindra Thar Earth Edition is the most expensive trim in the lineup, priced between Rs 15.40 lakh ($18,573) and Rs 17.60 lakh ($21,227) depending on the powertrain. Still, this is nearly four times cheaper than a genuine Jeep Wrangler which starts from Rs 62.65 lakh ($75,560) in the Indian market.
The Thar might be a two-door-only affair since it went on sale back in 2010, but the ladder-frame off-roader will soon gain a longer and more practical five-door version. Its market launch in India is expected in mid-2024 with multiple powertrain options.
