The Renault Kwid was launched in India three years ago. It’s a more upscale alternative to other local-made cars, such as the Tata Nano, and has a starting price of nearly $4,000.

It’s a jacked-up A-segment hatchback with crossover styling that sits on the Renault-Nissan CMF-A architecture. The Kwid is just a little over 3.6m (142+in) long, but has a quite generous ground clearance of 180mm (7.1in).

The base models use a three-cylinder 0.8-liter petrol engine with only 54 PS (53 hp / 40 kW) and 72 Nm (53l b-ft) of torque. Renault also offers a three-cylinder 1.0-liter unit with 68PS (67hp / 50kW) and 91Nm (67lb-ft) of torque for $5,320. Both have a 5-speed manual transmission as standard.

The range-topping member of the family is the Kwid Climber, which brings a few extra goodies and it’s offered from $6,830 with a five-speed automatic gearbox.

This is the flavor selected by TheDrive for an interesting journey across India. Their adventure started in Chennai and ended two days and almost 1,000 miles (1,609 km) later in Mumbai, on the west coast.

It’s worth mentioning that their Kwid test car came with quite a few options, which bumped its price to some $8,500.

Now, we won’t spoil the following video, but we’ll give you an insight into what you should expect: chaotic driving, dangerous maneuvers and what they claimed was a Le Mans-like experience… with lots of cows.
