Maserati is returning to the track with the new MCXtrema and they’ve released new details about the model, ahead of its launch this summer. However, before deliveries begin, the company is conducting a series of tests to ensure it’s up to snuff.

Billed as an evolution of the MC20, the MCXtrema had its first outing at the Autodromo Varano de’ Melegari this February. It was driven by chief test driver Andrea Bertolini and Maserati said the track was the ideal place to unleash the car’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 that develops 720 hp (537 kW / 730 PS) and 538 lb-ft (730 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to a six-speed sequential transmission that sends power to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential.

While Maserati didn’t say much about the testing process, they released a short shakedown video that showcases the car’s visceral sound. The company added that the model has already logged approximately 200 hours in a dynamic simulator as well as another 1,000 hours of virtual analysis. This is on top of the previous four years that went into developing the MC20.

According to Bertolini, “Taking a new car to the track always results in a special, unique feeling, as is the case for the MCXtrema. A wonderful creation made to devour the asphalt and trip through the curves, a true gem of mechanics and aerodynamics, perfect for balance and handling.”

Besides giving a glimpse at the testing process, Maserati announced an MCXlusiva customization program. It enables owners to select between Tech Beast, Corse, and Speed Beast variants. Customers will also have a choice of Matte Black or Grigio Corsa Bright wheels as well as Black, Blue or Ice seats.

That’s not exactly an abundance of options, but the company also announced plans for a BEASTspoke variant. It enables clients to add a number to the livery as well as select the hue for the steering wheel grips. Customers can also add an inscription – such as their name – to the “One of 62” plate in the cabin.

More interestingly, Maserati revealed an MCXperience program that promises to immerse owners in the “Maserati racing world, alongside professional drivers, and the technicians at Maserati Corse Services.” The real highlight here is access to on-track experiences, although the automaker didn’t elaborate.
