The fantasy of owning a camper van is mighty tempting, but for those of who only camp every once in a while, it could be hard to justify buying a whole vehicle for a once-a-year hobby. Fortunately, Volkswagen might have the perfect compromise.

The German carmaker has introduced the new “Good Night” package for the standard Multivan. This conversion kit allows for the quick and easy conversion of the cabin into a bedroom, without the expense or commitment of other camper van features, such as a kitchen or a pop tent.

The package includes a fold-out bed that is made up of a slatted frame that supports a 6.6-foot-long (2.02 meter) by 3.9-foot-wide (1.21 meter) mattress — making it wider than a twin but narrower than a double.

The bed is specifically designed to fit into supports that connect directly to the Multivan’s body, rather than its seats. Consequently, it can be utilized in any model, accommodating five, six, or seven passengers. Volkswagen also crafted the package with storage in mind; surfboards, for instance, can be stored under the mattress while you sleep.

In its folded orientation, the unit fits behind the second-row seats or on top of the folded-down third-row bench. However, this arrangement may limit the number of people you can accommodate on your camping trip.

In addition to the sleeping surface, the Good Night pack also offers other accessories to ensure you get a good night’s rest. That includes mosquito netting for the front side windows, to promote airflow without turning you into a feast for bugs.

For those who prefer to sleep in, the kit also includes blackout curtains to shield you from the morning sun (and its warmth). These curtains even block out the optional panoramic sunroof, allowing you to relax after gazing at the stars.

Two versions are available: the first option costs €2,867.90 (approximately US$3,100 at current exchange rates) and includes all the features listed above. The second Good Night kit adds camping chairs and a table, with a total price of €3,355.80 (around US$3,600).
