• Among car brands, Infiniti drivers top the percentage charts for speeding tickets, with 8.7% having been cited.
  • A BMW model takes the dubious honor of having the highest percentage of drivers with speeding tickets – a whopping 17.6%!
  • On the opposite end of the spectrum, Volvo drivers are the least likely to break the speed limit as only 2.7% have been caught speeding.

If you spend long enough on the road, you start to develop a sixth sense about which vehicles are about to do something wild, like speed obscenely. That may lead you to believe that you know which drivers have the most speeding tickets as a percentage of owners (not to be confused with the total number of ticketed drivers) on their record but, if you’re anything like me, you’d be wrong.

A new study from insurance provider, Insurify, reveals that the vehicle with the highest percentage of ticketed drivers in America is a BMW, but perhaps not the model you’d expect. Drumroll, please – – it’s the BMW i3!

Based on data provided by consumers during 4.6 million insurance applications, 17.6 percent of the little electric hatchback’s owners have been cited for speeding. Making things all the more confusing, the BMW whose drivers are the best behaved own the Z4 roadster, with just 4.5 percent reporting a speeding ticket on their driving record.

It’s also interesting to note that when it comes to brands, American companies are completely absent from the list of the 10 automakers with the heaviest-footed drivers. In fact, Insurify reports that five of the brands with the speediest drivers are Japanese, three are German, and two are Korean.

Infiniti has the highest rate of drivers with the most tickets, with the worst offenders being owners of the G37, 10.7 percent of whom have been cited in the past. Conversely, the model with the slowest drivers is the QX60 (5.2 percent), and brand-wide, 8.7 percent of drivers have been caught speeding, well above the national average of 7.1 percent.

Scion might be dead, but it’s owners remain over-active, with Toyota’s once youthful brand ranking second. About 8.4 percent of its drivers have been nicked for driving too quickly, with FR-S owners (13.7 percent) being the worst behaved.

Volkswagen is in third (8.3 percent) place, and it will surprise no one to learn that drivers of the Golf GTI (11.1 percent) have the hardest time respecting the posted limit — the Scion xA and the VW Touareg are owned by the best-behaved drivers.

Once more, the data for Subaru, with 8 percent of its drivers caught speeding, may validate certain biases, especially considering the WRX (13.6 percent) as the model with the highest rate of ticketed drivers. Conversely, drivers of the Ascent (1.9 percent) exhibit comparatively respectful behavior. Mazda’s (7.7 percent) position on the list is also unsurprising, with the MX-5 (9.2 percent) leading the way for the brand, while the Mazda3 (4.3 percent) boasts the most law-abiding drivers.

In sixth and seventh place are Audi and Kia, and in both cases 7.6 percent of the brands’ drivers have a speeding citation. For the German brand, S4 drivers (14.6 percent) are the worst while SQ5 drivers are the best (1.5 percent), and for the Korean brand, Stinger owners (13.4 percent) lead the way, while people behind the wheel of the Soul EV (5 percent) toot along at the speed limit.

For Honda (7.5 percent), the S2000 (10.8 percent) is the model with the fastest drivers and the CR-V (5 percent) has the slowest owners. BMW is in ninth place (7.4 percent) and we’ve covered its unusual data, while Hyundai rounds out the top 10 (7.4 percent), and it won’t surprise you to learn that the enthusiast-oriented Genesis Coupe (13.4 percent) has the most aggressive drivers, while the family-oriented Santa Fe XL (3.9 percent) has the calmest.

The most well-behaved drivers

On the other end of the spectrum, the three brands whose drivers have the fewest speeding tickets are Cadillac (5.4 percent), Tesla (5 percent), and Volvo, just 2.7 percent of whose drivers have been cited for breaking the speed limit.
