  • The Mirage might be gone from the US lineup in a couple of years, as Mitsubishi transitions to a crossover-only brand.

Mitsubishi announced its sales numbers for the second quarter of 2024 in the US, with the absolute highlight being the impressive sales performance of the Mirage. The entry-level model skyrocketed compared to last year, with a 146 percent increase in Q2 2024 compared to Q2 2023.

This can be broken down to a whopping 243.4 percent increase for the Mirage hatchback, and a more modest 70.3 percent increase for the Mirage G4 sedan.

In the first half of 2024, Mitsubishi sold 9,862 units of the Mirage, 85.5 percent more than the 5,316 units sold in the same period last year. This suggests that the subcompact model will easily surpass the 13,220 sales of 2023, the model’s slowest-selling year yet. Still, annual sales will likely remain far from the peak of 26,966 units in 2019.

Overall, Mitsubishi sales in the US reached 22,727 units in Q2 2024, 7.6 percent down compared to the 24,602 units in Q2 2023. Still, the half-year results are improved, with 51,130 units (H1 2024) versus 45,540 units (H1 2023), representing Mitsubishi’s strongest first-half sales numbers since 2021.

The current generation of the Mitsubishi Mirage / Space Star has been around largely unchanged since 2011, with two facelifts in 2015 and 2019 respectively. The second facelift arrived in the US market for the 2021 model year, affecting both the hatchback and the sedan models. The sole powertrain option is a naturally-aspirated 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine, good for 76 hp (57 kW / 77 PS) and 74 lb-ft (100 Nm) of torque.

The Mirage was discontinued from its home market in Japan in 2023 but remained on sale in Europe and the US, where it got new colors and more equipment for 2024. Despite the recent sales increase, it is not clear how much longer Mitsubishi will keep the Mirage on sale. The cheapest model in the lineup might be gone by the middle of the decade, as Mitsubishi is transitioning to a crossover-only brand.
