The Subaru Motorsports USA division is cooking up something special for this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, going under the cool name “Project Midnight”. The specially prepared WRX will feature a dark livery and oversized aero components and will participate in the hill climb with rally driver Scott Speed behind the wheel.
The official teasers reveal a full-black exterior with the Subaru emblem on the profile, and an enormous wing at the back. The wide fender extensions look similar to the Subaru rally car that competes at the American Rally Association Championship, but the front bumper is different.

Besides the deeper bumper extension, we can see carbon fiber garnish around the intakes, and dual canards distinguishing it from previous WRX rally cars. The rear diffuser also appears to be made of carbon fiber, contributing to lower weight. The exposed slick tires suggest that this thing was built to deliver the ultimate performance on the tarmac, as it looks like a time attack monster.
Scott Speed is a four-time rallycross champion who has also driven F1, Formula E, and NASCAR vehicles among other racecars. The driver already has his name printed on the rear windows of the Project Midnight, right next to the American flag.
Subaru Project Midnight
According to the cryptic press release, the “as-yet unreleased beast is unlike anything Subaru Motorsports USA has ever brought to Goodwood – or for that matter, anywhere”. The company added that the Project Midnight will “shock the crowd in a completely different way as it fires up the hill”, making a “healthy contrast and a worthy stablemate to the Family Huckster”.
The Family Huckster is a heavily modified 1983 Subaru GL that debuted at the Gymkhana 2022 with an 862-hp turbocharged 2.3-liter engine, a carbon fiber body, and active aerodynamics. This will also be present at Goodwood, driven by the usual suspect – Travis Pastrana. For those who didn’t follow the news last year, the Family Huckster finished second overall at the Goodwood hill climb, being surpassed only by the McLaren Solus GT hypercar.
It remains to be seen if Project Midnight will offer similar levels of performance. Subaru’s comments make us think of the possibility of a fully electric powertrain, although the teasers do not give away much about the vehicle’s underpinnings. Hopefully, all of our questions will be answered on July 11 at Goodwood.
