- BMW’s second-generation 2-Series Gran Coupe has been spotted, revealing its grille and bumper design and large digital dashboard.
- Slim grille features multi-directional grille bars like the new 1-Series and X3.
- Heavily revised version of current sedan shares its transverse-engined platform with the X1 and 1-Series hatch, but not the two-door 2-Series coupe.
BMW’s 2-Series sales rose 54 percent in the US during the first six months of 2024, and though the automaker doesn’t break out the figures into four-door Gran Coupe and two-door Coupe, it’s safe to assume that the sedan version is still doing a great job of pulling in a crowd even though this second-generation model is waiting in the wings.
Like its cousin, the new European-market 1-Series hatch that was revealed last month, the 2025 Gran Coupe is a heavily-updated version of today’s GC and rides on the same transverse-engined platform – one it also shares with the X1 and Mini.

Our spy photo team has captured both regular Gran Coupe and sporty M235 prototypes before, but on both occasions BMW’s test team had covered the grille, bumper and part of the C-pillar with tape to obscure the important details. That was almost a year ago, though, and with a fall 2024 or spring 2025 launch now not far away, some of that disguise has been left in the workshop.
And that includes the ugly placeholder mesh that previously covered the grille. With that removed we can see that the long, slim double-kidney opening will feature the same strange multidirectional grille bars we’ve already seen on recent new BMWs like the 1-Series and X1.
The camouflage tape on some of the bars tries to trick us into thinking that they all point upwards, but closer inspection reveals that the bars at the outer edges run diagonally towards the headlights. That’ll be the case for ordinary Gran Coupes, anyway. M Sport and M235 cars will feature different grilles with black, horizontal bars.
Also now visible for the first time is the shape of the lower bumper, including the triangular intakes at each corner. The headlights still have a transparent camouflage over them to prevent us getting a look at the new DRLs, however, as do the taillights.
The main group of images shows a non-M Gran Coupe that could be a simple 120, meaning it’s powered a 1.5-liter three-cylinder mild hybrid making 168 hp (170 PS). But two bonus pics are of M235 xDrive cars that, going by the recent 1-Series updates, should deliver 296 hp (300 PS) in Europe and 312 hp (316 PS) in the US courtesy of a 2.0-liter turbo four.
One of those images even gives us a look inside the cabin, and though the car is too far away to see anything in detail, it’s still possible to make out the new combined digital instrument cluster and media screen, something the 2-Series is among the last to adopt.
