Mazda has introduced the 2025 CX-50 and it’s notable for featuring an all-new hybrid variant. It returns 38 mpg combined, which is 10 mpg more than the standard model and enough to save drivers approximately $575 in fuel annually.
Starting under the hood, the CX-50 has been outfitted with a Toyota Hybrid System that consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, three electric motors, an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission, and a small battery pack. This setup gives the all-wheel drive crossover a combined output of 219 hp (163 kW / 222 PS) and 163 lb-ft (221 Nm) of torque.

While the hybrid system comes from Toyota, Mazda said their engineers “calibrated even the finest details of the hybrid powertrain, such as the accelerator pedal response to offer the connected, responsive driving dynamics that CX-50 is known for.” The company went on to say the crossover has a “refined, smooth drive” as well as a towing capacity of up to 1,500 lbs (680 kg).
On the styling front, there isn’t much to report but the CX-50 Hybrid is distinguished by a revised front bumper and unique 17- or 19-inch alloy wheels. The model also offers red leather, which is exclusive to the hybrid.
Besides the all-new hybrid variant, the 2025 CX-50 receives a handful of other updates including Alexa integration on all models. The crossover also offers additional standard safety features including rear seat alert, vehicle exit warning, and an improved version of Smart Brake Support that has nighttime pedestrian detection as well as head-on collision mitigation technology.
Additional changes are limited, but Mazda tweaked some packages and added additional equipment to the range-topping CX-50 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. In particular, the upscale crossover now comes equipped with Front Cross Traffic Alert.
Under the hood, 2.5 S variants have a familiar 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 187 hp (139 kW / 190 PS) and 185 lb-ft (251 Nm) of torque. However, the fuel economy rating climbs slightly to 25 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined.
Buyers looking for more power can opt for a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with up to 256 hp (191 kW / 260 PS) and 320 lb-ft (433 Nm) of torque. Those numbers fall to 227 hp (169 kW / 230 PS) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) on regular 87 octane fuel.
The 2025 Mazda CX-50 will begin arriving at U.S. dealerships next month, but the CX-50 Hybrid won’t go on sale until late this year.
