- Rear spoilers have become a defining design element for many cars.
- Here are a few of our favorite production spoilers of all time.
- The “best” rear spoiler is subjective and depends on personal taste.
Today, automakers and designers sometimes add elements to cars that have nothing to do with performance. Fake grilles, fake vents, and fake exhaust tips abound. Decades ago though, the things that many find cool today existed on performance vehicles because they were functionally vital (in most cases).
The rear spoiler is just one such element that still has a place in modern performance vehicles. The question is which rear spoiler looks the best? We put this same question out to the Carscoops staff and the answers were all over the place. Our lead image, the Toyota Supra, is a great example of a car known in part because of its wild-looking (for the time) spoiler.

That’s a great launching-off spot too because this QOTD isn’t just about the biggest or wildest spoiler of all time. That would just go to something like the Plymouth Superbird or the Koenigsegg One:1. Instead, we’re asking about the best-looking spoiler. The one that is so integral to the design and good-looking that it’s nearly as important as the rest of the car.
Porsche has long dominated this game to a degree with its ducktail spoilers on many a 911. They take an already well-known silhouette and elevate it even further. Before Subaru killed the STI it was also easily distinguishable by its giant rear spoiler.
Some classic cars deserve some love here too. The Ferrari F40 has about as basic a wing as one could ask for but it was clearly iconic and integral to the styling. The Ford Escort RS Cosworth and its whale tail received some love in our chat as well. The Lamborghini Countach and its wing, which some say was actually bad for aerodynamics, gets some love as well.
If we’re talking older cars though I’ll throw a big vote in for the RUF CTR2 Sport. Am I biased for driving its wheels off in Gran Turismo for several years? Absolutely. Does it still look utterly wild and stunning? Also yes. What do you think is the best-looking production rear spoiler ever? Let us know in the comments below!
