• The MG ZS will soon enter its second generation, with a self-charging hybrid powertrain.
  • The SUV adopts MG’s latest styling language and a nicer interior.
  • The new model will debut on August 28 in continental Europe, the UK, and Australia.

MG published the first teasers for the second generation ZS, which will debut on August 28. The MG ZS Hybrid+ will feature a redesigned exterior, improved interior quality, and a self-charging hybrid powertrain.

The revealing teasers depict a completely redesigned bodywork, in line with MG’s latest styling language. At the front, the large grille is flanked by aggressive LED headlights, sending Lexus LBX vibes.

The profile features the signature sculpted rear shoulders, combined with a flatter beltline. The tail looks similar to the MG3 supermini, albeit with new taillights, a sharper tailgate, and a skid plate on the rear bumper. Despite being an electrified offering, MG equipped the subcompact SUV with dual tailpipes, although it is not clear if these are functional.

The video doesn’t show us the interior, which is expected to feature better-quality material and more modern technology.

The new generation of the MG ZS will most likely share the Hybrid+ powertrain with the MG3 hatchback. The latter comprises a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine generating 101 hp (75 kW / 102 PS), a single electric motor producing 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS), a three-speed automatic gearbox, and a small battery with a capacity of 1.83 kWh.

The new setup is expected to make the upcoming ZS significantly more efficient compared to its non-electrified predecessor, posing as an alternative to rivals, like the Toyota Yaris Cross hybrid. Furthermore, with a combined output of 192 hp (143 kW / 194 PS), it will offer more power than most of its competitors, including the likes of the Ford Puma, Peugeot 2008, and Hyundai Kona.

While the MG3 supermini is exclusively available in self-charging hybrid form, the MG ZS Hybrid+ will reportedly be joined by turbocharged gasoline and fully electric powertrain options, answering the needs of a greater spectrum of buyers.

The outgoing MG ZS was introduced in China back in 2017, with the fully electric version following in 2018. The subcompact SUV received a facelift in 2019.

The new MG ZS will first launch in Europe, the UK, and Australia, followed by other markets. Orders will likely open later this month, with the first deliveries expected in October 2024.
