In the footage, her son can be heard pleading with the officer to help his mom. “She’s having a seizure, she sunk!” he screams. “She’s in the water, help her.”
After rushing over to the scene, Cobb found Winbush unconscious and in the locked Charger. With the help of a good samaritan who was on the scene, they were able to break a window and pull the mom of two from the car. The officer proceeded to perform CPR on her, and after several minutes, Winbush’s pulse returned, and she came to.
The woman was taken to a nearby hospital and, according to AP, spent three weeks in the ICU. Fortunately, she is expected to make a complete recovery.
Six days after the incident, Officer Cobb was honored with a Life-Saving Award from the West Orange Police Department for saving the mother.
“Officer Cobb’s quick response, recognition of the emergency, and immediate actions and effective life-saving measures resulted directly in saving the life of Jonquetta Winbush,” the department said. “A failure to act could have led to a tragic outcome.”
