Lucid is working on a new model to rival the Tesla Model Y that’ll be priced at under $50,000. However, this isn’t the only ‘entry-level’ EV it’s working on, as the carmaker has revealed there are two other accessible models on the horizon.
Chief executive Peter Rawlinson has spoken quite openly about Lucid’s planned Model Y competitor but little has been said about its other models. During a recent interview at Monterey Car Week, senior vice president of Design and Brand at Lucid Motors, Derek Jenkins, noted the firm’s “mid-size program” will consist of “three vehicles.”

The second of these new models is widely expected to be a sedan similar in size to the Tesla Model 3. In addition to competing with the most popular electric sedan, it’ll also have to fend off alternatives like the Hyundai Ioniq 6, Polestar 2, and BMW i4. Then there’s the third model.
Jenkins did not reveal what form this model will take. However, he dashed any hopes of it being an estate or station wagon, stating there’s simply not enough growth in this segment to justify developing it.
“Certainly, we’ve explored it,” he told CarBuzz. “Air is a good format for that, but I don’t think that we can justify that going forward, at least not now. Everyone, myself, all the engineers, we’re all huge wagon fans. I’ve owned a bunch of Audi wagons over the years, and I love that stuff. But, you know? It’s even a dying segment, even in Europe. The enthusiasts think performance wagons are awesome, but there’s still no concrete evidence that there’s growth there. I don’t see us going out on that limb.”
An area Lucid does appear open to is the world of more rugged SUVs. According to Jenkins, “the off-road space is going to continue to morph and evolve” and “you get the benefit of something that is ever so slightly sleeker and ever so slightly car-like to get the efficiency, both the space and the aero efficiency, but you ruggedize it to give you a little bit more of that robustness and durability.”
Does this mean Lucid could create something similar to the Rivian R3X? Let’s hope so.
