- Mercedes’ new eCLA retains the EV concept’s sleek design and high-tech features.
- Built on the flexible MMA platform, it promises impressive range and fast charging.
- Rivals include the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4, with the CLA expected to debut in 2025.
Mercedes-Benz is gunning for a slice of the formula that has made Tesla’s Model 3 successful with an all-electric version of the next-generation CLA that will also be offered with hybrid powertrains. Previewed last year in concept guise, the compact offering will be available as a sedan and later on, a shooting brake wagon.
Both the electric and combustion variants are anticipated to reach dealerships in 2025, though some sources indicate that Mercedes might introduce the EV first, with the ICE models arriving later.
More: Mercedes-AMG’s New Taycan Killer Could Look Like This
Recent spy shots have revealed production-ready prototypes of the next-generation CLA undergoing testing, indicating that an official reveal could be just around the corner. For those interested in the details, we’ve illustratively decoded the camouflage and gathered everything we know about it to date.
Aero-Optimised
Unlike many concept cars that get watered down for production, the electrified CLA’s exterior heavily mirrors the concept version with a fluid, aerodynamic silhouette.
At the front, the compact model sports a diamond-studded faux front grille flanked by lower air ducts that follow the current Mercedes-AMG aesthetic. Sitting above is a full-width lightbar that mirrors the clamshell hood in profile, while an illuminated three-pointed starDRL motif sits within the headlamps.
A sharp crease runs out from the headlamps into the front fenders and doors, repeating the same element across the hind quarters towards the taillights. Additionally, flush-mounted door handles and 21-inch wheels enhance the vehicle’s streamlined appearance, ensuring heads will turn wherever it goes.
Interior Smarts
Inside, the CLA fuses tech-infused minimalist elegance with practical functionality. While the production model will feature a significantly toned-down version of the concept’s interior, it still boasts a futuristic cab aesthetic.
Key features include an AI-powered MBUX infotainment system, which integrates a full-width, lozenge-shaped display positioned above the center console. The vehicle’s longer wheelbase will improve rear-seat comfort, while a comprehensive suite of driver assistance features is expected—though it remains to be seen whether these will include subscription-based services.
Future Cars: 2026 BMW Neue Klasse Electric Sports Coupe
The third-generation CLA will feature a new Level 2++ autonomous system for city and urban driving. Building on Mercedes-Benz’s Drive Pilot, it uses sensors and AI, though driver oversight is still required. Expect it as an option on all upcoming models using the MMA platform.
Powertrain Options
Underneath, the CLA is built on the flexible MMA platform, which accommodates both electric and internal combustion powertrains. While official numbers are yet to be disclosed, the EV concept featured a lightweight 235 hp (175 kW / 238 PS) electric motor with an overall driving range exceeding 466 miles (750 km).
The production version of the EV will utilize an 800-volt system, allowing for rapid charging capabilities up to 250 kW. This will enable the sedan to gain 248 miles (400 km) of range within just 15 minutes of charging. Additionally, the CLA will feature bidirectional charging capabilities, supporting Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) functions, further enhancing its versatility and integration into the electric ecosystem.
On the internal combustion front, the CLA will forgo diesel engines in favor of standard four-cylinder gasoline units paired with hybrid assistance.
Flagship AMG EV with 500HP
Beyond the standard models, Mercedes-Benz is already testing a flagship AMG variant, widely anticipated to be an electric model. This high-performance version is rumored to feature dual electric motors per axle, delivering around 500 horsepower—approximately 80 more than the current ICE CLA 45 AMG.
Compared to the standard battery-powered CLAs, the AMG variant will feature enhanced electric motors, an advanced battery cooling system, a more aggressive body kit with a dramatic ducktail spoiler, and distinctive interior details like bespoke trims and seats.
Rivals and Reveal
On the battery front, much will depend on on pricing, but potential rivals could include the Tesla Model 3, BMW i4 , and the upcoming Audi A4 e-tron, though the upcoming 2026 Mercedes-Benz C-Class EV might be a closer match to some of these offerings. Depending on the market, the Polestar 2 and BYD Seal also stand out, along with a range of other Chinese-market electric sedans that are rapidly expanding their presence.

The ICE models will face competition from the likes of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe and Audi A3 sedans, as well as larger, yet similarly priced four-door alternatives in the less premium segments.
The official debut is anticipated in the coming months, with the sporty sedan set to arrive in North American showrooms next year, either as a 2025MY or 2026MY offering.
