• The recall impacts Corolla Cross Hybrid models built from June 1, 2022, to September 10, 2024.
  • Dealers will update the skid control ECU software free of charge.
  • The fault could trigger a hard brake pedal and impact braking performance.

Toyota needs to fix more than 42,000 Corolla Cross Hybrid models in the United States because of a fault related to a brake actuator and the skid control ECU which may impact braking performance.

The carmaker notes that impacted vehicles have faulty software, causing the brake fluid pressure not to be controlled as designed, particularly when the brake pedal is applied during cornering.

If this happens, drivers may experience a “hard brake pedal with reduced braking force,” meaning braking distances can increase.

In total, 42,199 vehicles in the United States are involved in the recall. These consist of 2023-2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid models manufactured between June 1, 2022, and September 10, 2024. Toyota says 100% of subject vehicles have a skid control ECU with the programming issue and, as such, all are at risk of developing a hard brake pedal. As of September 20, Toyota added it was investigating if other models with similar software have the same fault.

Toyota didn’t reveal if it’s aware of any accidents or injuries caused by the braking issue.

Faulty Software Forces Toyota To Recall Thousands Of Corolla Cross Hybrids

Dealerships were notified of the recall in early September, while owners will be notified before November 19. All owners of subject Corolla Cross Hybrid models will be asked to return their vehicle to a Toyota dealer where the skid control ECU software will be updated free of charge.

Earlier in September, Toyota announced it had developed a fix for a problem with the Grand Highlander and Lexus TX that had forced it to initiate a stop-sale of the two popular SUVs due to defective side-curtain shield airbags.
