Renault has cranked its teaser machine into action and revealed multiple detail images of the new 4 EV ahead of its global debut at the Paris Motor Show later this month.

The small SUV is based on the same platform as the new electric 5, and like that car, borrows both its name and design from a classic Renault. Between knowledge of the original 1961-94 Renault 4, the 2022 4Ever Trophy concept and spy shots of the upcoming production model, we had a good idea of what to expect, but these latest teaser shots give us out first chance to see the new car up-close.

Retained from the concept are the rectangular, illuminated grille and lit badge – the latter a first for a production Renault. Three-part segmented taillights and a trapezoidal rear quarter window, also make the transition from show car to the street, both taking their cues from the 1960s original, as do the bumper extensions, though this time they’re plastic, not chrome.

Renault’s designers have even added a diagonal strip of trim ahead of the doors to mimic the seam visible on the first 4, and horizontal ribs along the flanks like the ones seen on 1980s versions. The teaser shots also reveal a retractable canvas roof and roof spoiler, plus black plastic wheelarch extensions to make the 4 look like it can handle some rough terrain, but that machismo is all smoke and mirrors.

Here’s The Retro-Futuristic Renault 4 EV, Or At Least Bits Of It

Despite what its styling suggests, the new 4 is front-wheel drive, and will likely come with the same range of single-motor drivetrains offered to 5 buyers. That means a choice between 94 hp (95 PS / 70 kW), 121 hp (123 PS / 90 kW) and 148 hp (140 PS / 110 kW) outputs. We’re also expecting Renault to let buyers pick from 40 and 52 kWh batteries, as they can in the hatch. The 4,140 mm (163 inches) 4 SUV won’t travel as far when equipped with the same battery as the 3,920 mm (154.3 inches) 5, but it will deliver greater practicality in return, and a heap more luxury than the original no-frills 4 ever did.
