• The fifth-gen Ford Expedition brings fresh design, more tech and practicality.
  • The Expedition Tremor debuts as the most rugged and off-road capable trim.
  • New features include the split tailgate and the 24-inch digital instrument cluster.

Ford introduced the fifth generation of the Expedition full-size SUV with a redesigned exterior, an overhauled interior, new trims and features.

According to the automaker, the redesign was focused on the needs of “big, active families”. Highlights include the new off-road-focused Tremor trim, the high-tech digital dashboard with a 24-inch panoramic display, and the improved cargo area with Ford Split Gate seating and a foldable table.

The new generation is available in Expedition and Expedition Max bodystyles, retaining a similar footprint to its predecessors. The standard model measures 209.9 inches (5,331 mm) long with a 122.5-inch (3,112 mm) wheelbase, while the Max stretches to 221.7 inches (5,631 mm), with 131.5 inches (3,340 mm) between the axles. Both versions measure 80 inches (2,032 mm) wide.

Styling-wise, the new face wears a cleaner design for the grille and LED headlights, together with a more SUV-like bumper. The profile and proportions are quite familiar, although the black pillars create a continuous strip with the greenhouse. The redesigned tail features softer lines, with high-mounted taillights and plenty of black trim between them.

2025 FORD EXPEDITION TREMOR

The rugged Expedition Tremor is visually distinguished by the orange accents, the auxiliary LEDs on the grille, the underbody protection (skid plates and running boards), and the 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires. The Tremor offers a class-leading 10.6 inches (269 mm) of ground clearance matching the discontinued Timberline, alongside standard four-wheel-drive with an electronic locking rear differential.

Overhauled Interior

The cabin of the Expedition marks the biggest change compared to its predecessor. The portrait display is replaced by a landscape unit, and a 24-inch panoramic display serving as a digital instrument cluster.

New tech is nice, but the highlight of the new generation is the electric Ford Split Gate, adding an extra level of practicality at the cargo area. The upper three-quarters of the tailgate open upwards, with the lower quarter folding down like a truck – similar to the mechanically-related Lincoln Navigator.

The Split Gate supports up to 500 pounds (227 kg), so you can sit on it. Furthermore, the seatback transforms into a serving table, the boot offers power outlets for connecting all kinds of electronic devices, and the available exterior zone lighting creates the perfect atmosphere on the campsite.

Besides the clever boot, Ford added more practicality traits inside the cabin. The Flex Powered Console can slide back by nearly 8 inches (20 cm), getting closer to the second-row passengers while creating extra space for storage between the front seats.

The company also offers the option of a 40/20/40 third-row bench seat for the transportation of long objects, and the Digital Device Holders on the front headrests for smartphones or tablets.

Carry-Over V6 Powertrains

The Active, King Ranch, and Platinum trims are fitted with a carry-over 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 powertrain producing 400 hp (298 kW / 406 PS) and 480 lb-ft (651 Nm) of torque. Furthermore, a high-output version of the V6 with 440 hp (328 kW / 446 PS) and 510 lb-ft (691 Nm) is standard on the Tremor and optionally available on the Platinum.

Depending on the trim, power is transmitted to the rear or to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic. The maximum towing capacity is 7,000 pounds (3,175 kg), or up to 9,600 pounds (4,355 kg) with a weight-distributing hitch. Those with a trailer will also find the Pro Trailer Hitch Assist and Backup Assist systems helpful. Finally, the Ford BlueCruise ADAS is now available in most Expedition trims, offering hands-free driving on the highway.

The 2025 Ford Expedition will be available to order starting October 24, with the first deliveries expected in Spring. Pricing starts from $61,700 before on-road costs, representing an increase of $6,070 compared to the outgoing model.
