• Ford appears set to unveil a sub-seven minute lap time of the Nurburgring in the Mustang GTD.
  • That would make it the first stock American car to achieve such a feat.
  • It’ll have to go well below seven minutes to hit the target Jim Farley is aiming at though.

The Ford Mustang GTD is unlike any other pony car ever made. It makes 815 horsepower (608 kW), it delivers 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque, and it has real pieces of jet fighters in it. It’s going to cost buyers some $325,000 when it’s finally available and now it’s going after a very important record. Based on what Ford just released, the Mustang GTD might be the fastest production American car to ever lap the Nurburgring.

The new video dubbed “Ford Mustang GTD: Road to the Ring Teaser” is exactly what it sounds like. At only 48 seconds long, the focus is clear from the outset, lapping the Nurburgring in under seven minutes. No stock American car has ever achieved that. At least, not that we know of. Given the timing of this trailer, it seems that the GTD might have pulled it off.

Nürburgring Lap Times: Fastest Cars And Lap Records In 2024

Let’s put all of this into perspective. The fastest American car to lap the ring is the 2017 SRT Viper ACR. It did this deed in 7:01.30. While that’s undeniably quick, it’s likely not the car’s full potential. When it set that record it did so during the first full-speed run of the testing day. Sadly, the car suffered a crash, and the effort to go even faster ended there.

How impressive would this record be if Ford only managed to go a few seconds faster? Yes, it would technically still be the first American car to break the seven-minute barrier, but that’s not the only goal. Ford has bigger ambitions than just scraping past the mark.

Ford CEO Jim Farley has likened the Mustang GTD to Porsche’s GT3, setting the bar high. To outperform that famed German supercar, the Mustang will need to beat the GT3 RS’s blistering 6:44.848 lap time. Now that would create a significant gap over the SRT Viper and give this six-figure Ford some serious credibility. For now, we wait to see the official time when Ford reveals it later this year.
