• The Miura being overhauled for the Tokyo Auto Salon looks rusty and neglected.
  • In addition to transforming the car’s exterior, Liberty Walk appears to be restoring the car’s famed naturally-aspirated V12.

Two years ago, Japanese tuner Liberty Walk sparked controversy when it took a Ferrari F40 and overhauled it with a widebody kit. According to reports, Ferrari was so upset by the car that it removed that specific F40 from its official registry. Twelve months later, Liberty Walk followed it up with a widebody version of another supercar great, the Lamborghini Countach. It’s now preparing another wild one-off for January’s Tokyo Auto Show, this time based on the Lamborghini Miura.

Fewer than 800 Miuras were ever built according to the Lamborghini Miura Register, and details about the specific car that Liberty Walk has got its hands on are limited. However, photos shared on social media of the project reveal that the tuner is doing much more than simply developing a new bodykit for the car.

The Miura’s original bodywork has been stripped away and appears to be getting completely restored, before being modified. Lamborghini enthusiasts may be relieved to learn that this does not appear to be a pristine Miura that Liberty Walk is working on, and instead, it looks rusty and neglected. The tuner seems to be giving it a new lease on life, even though the project is bound to trigger fierce debate among purists.

A handful of other firms have been tagged in Instagram posts about the car, suggesting they too are playing a role in the car’s creation. One of these is Armytrix, a firm best known for manufacturing some of the craziest exhaust systems on the planet. We can only begin to imagine what it may come up with for the Miura.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Liberty Walk has built something resembling a Miura. In 2018, the tuner used the chassis of a replica Ford GT40 to build a one-off that looked like a widebody Miura, but actually wasn’t a legitimate Lamborghini.
