- Continental will unveil a CES concept using sensors to recognize and respond to users.
- The study interprets movements, enabling it to automatically open the trunk for owners.
- These AI-powered features could enter production within the next three to five years.
CES is right around the corner and Continental has announced plans to introduce a new concept. Dubbed the Intelligent Vehicle Experience Car, the one-off model promises a “technological leap through the fusion of AI and sensor technology.”
This starts before the driver enters the car as the concept uses biometrics to recognize them as they approach. More interestingly, the concept can interpret “facial and movement characteristics,” and then take actions based on them.

As an example, if the car recognizes you and notices you’re walking to the trunk, it could automatically open it for you. However, in this phase, trunk opening is operated by a “slight kick in the direction of the rear bumper.”
When you’re ready to get into the vehicle, it could recognize your hand reaching for the door and unlock it. If someone unfamiliar approaches, it will remain locked and a warning system will be activated.
Continental said these features could go into production within the next three to five years as they combine artificial intelligence algorithms with sensors that are already widely available in vehicles. These include 360° cameras as well as ultra-wideband radar sensors.
Continental’s Head of Architecture and Network Solutions, Jean-François Tarabbia, said “The car is on track to become a smart device, similar to a cell phone, which will use biometric technologies to take the user experience to a new level of security and comfort.”
Besides the biometric concept, Continental will show a host of other technologies at CES including an exterior window display and an “emotional cockpit,” which combines Swarovski crystals with the “worlds-first user customizable E-Ink trimline.” The company will also highlight their autonomous driving technology and automotive software.
