- Continental has developed a system that can project images onto rear side windows.
- The windows could be used to display everything from the car’s charging status to logos of your favorite sports team.
- AI-enabled software could make relevant suggestions on what to display at any given time.
Screens have become a huge part of modern automobiles and we’ve seen everything from front passenger displays to a 55-inch display in recent years. However, displays won’t be limited to the interior in the future.
Quite the opposite as Continental has used CES to showcase their window projection technology. Designed to show content to people outside, the system combines a mini projector with a side window that can be electrically darkened to act as a projection surface.

When activated, the window fully darkens while information is projected onto it via a device that is located in the roof lining. The projector is capable of showing “extremely high resolution” images and graphics, which can be easily personalized.
Speaking of software, there’s an eTravel.companion which uses artificial intelligence to display relevant information. As Continental explained, “Based on data, learned preferences and the current situation, the software generates suggestions in real time, which can be displayed on the rear windows before getting into the vehicle.”
The usefulness varies by application, but it could be used to display charging information for electric vehicles. Furthermore, if the battery is low, the display could suggest a nearby charging station.
Continental also mentioned the possibility of enabling owners to express themselves. In particular, if you’re navigating to a sports stadium to catch a game, the software could suggest displaying the team’s logo on the side windows.
It’s also easy to envision other possible applications such as those for ride-hailing services. Here, the display could be used to show the name of who’s being picked up by that particular car.
