• Someone bought a brand-new 1990 Chevy Camaro and stored it untouched for decades.
  • This pristine Camaro IROC-Z has only six miles on the odometer and zero signs of use.
  • Now, it’s headed to auction at Mecum’s 2025 Kissimmee event in Florida on January 18.

Of all six generations of the Chevrolet Camaro, the third is like the middle child of the family, often overlooked and underappreciated. Critics have long bemoaned its meager power on offer, dismissing it in favor of its burlier siblings. But this particular 1990 example is worth a second glance.

Why? Because it represents the absolute pinnacle of the third-gen Camaro—and it’s practically frozen in time. With just six miles on the odometer, this IROC-Z is gearing up for auction, offering a pristine glimpse back to the early ‘90s.

Think of this car less as a vehicle and more as a museum exhibit. Better yet, a time machine that takes us back to 1990 when mullets were cool (again), cassette tapes ruled, and this Camaro IROC-Z 1LE rolled off the production line. It’s loaded onto a transport truck, shipped to a dealership, sold to a meticulous buyer, and then… nothing.

According to Mecum, which is handling the auction, the original owner inexplicably kept the car in “basement storage” for over 30 years without ever being plated or driven. Why? No one really knows, but the result is a time capsule.

A Rare Breed of IROC-Z

This isn’t just your run-of-the-mill IROC-Z Camaro, either. Sure, the IROC-Z trim was already top-shelf in 1990, but this one goes even further with the coveted 1LE package. That essentially incorporates more high-performance equipment onto the vehicle including front disc brakes from the Corvette, heavy duty shocks, an aluminum driveshaft, and an engine oil cooler.

To get all of that, the original buyer had to delete air conditioning from the order then add the “Performance Axle Package.” Unsurprisingly, records indicate that Chevrolet only produced 62 of these 1LE-equipped Camaros in 1990, making this car a rare gem.

A Six-Mile Mystery

Clearly, they knew what they wanted and ended up getting it. Why they never used the car is unknown but with just six miles on the odometer, it’s likely the lowest mileage IROC-Z 1LE in existence. The next owner will have to decide whether or not to add miles or to keep this as a showpiece.

It’ll come with the original 350 cubic inch 245 hp (182 kW) V8 under the hood, a four-speed automatic gearbox, and rear-wheel drive. They’ll also get a slew of original documents that include letters to and from the original owner and dealer and the original build sheet.
