• The GR86 and BRZ now offer software upgrades for better throttle and shifting performance.
  • Manual models get sharper throttle response for easier blipping during spirited downshifts.
  • Automatic versions allow quicker manual-mode downshifts thanks to expanded RPM tolerance.

Toyota Gazoo Racing and Subaru have announced a small treat for current GR86 and BRZ owners—at least for those in Japan. The twin sports cars are now eligible for an optional software upgrade, designed to sharpen throttle response in manual models and improve downshifting performance in automatics.

The update is compatible with second-generation Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86, offering a performance boost inspired by feedback from customers and professional drivers alike. The goal? To refine the driving dynamics of these sports cars, particularly for those who enjoy pushing their limits on the track.

For enthusiasts behind the wheel of the six-speed manual transmission models, the software update adjusts throttle settings for a more direct and engaging response. This tweak also smooths out “blipping” during downshifts, making the experience more intuitive and rewarding, especially for track-day purists or anyone who enjoys a perfectly timed heel-toe maneuver.

Meanwhile, owners of the six-speed automatic models aren’t left out. Their cars will gain expanded RPM tolerance during manual-mode downshifts. The result? Faster, smoother gear changes without the fear of over-revving the 2.4-liter naturally aspirated flat-four engine that powers both cars.

The “Subaru Sport Drive e-Tune” upgrade and the equivalent by Toyota are set to launch in the Japanese market in spring 2025. At the moment, it remains unclear if the software will be made available to GR86 and BRZ owners in other markets.

According to a dedicated website by Subaru, the cost of the software upgrade is ¥55,000 ($315) for manual vehicles and ¥33,000 ($190) for automatic vehicles, excluding labor and tax. Owners of the GR86 and the BRZ will be able to buy and install the software through Toyota GR Garage locations and Subaru dealers in Japan.

There’s currently no word on if or when this software update will be available in markets outside of Japan.
