The carpocalypse has claimed numerous victims including the Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion, Mazda6, and Nissan Maxima. Given that, it’s surprising to see that Kia’s best-selling vehicle in January was a sedan.
The Korean automaker sold 11,616 K4s and Fortes last month, which made them Kia’s best-selling vehicle in January. They were followed closely by the Sportage, which found 11,357 buyers. Rounding out the podium was the aging, but immensely popular Telluride, which generated 8,771 sales.

Getting back to sedans, the K4 wasn’t the only winner as K5 sales were up 32.5% from a year ago to 4,357 units. The Carnival minivan also had a good month as sales were up 21.6%.
Not all models were as lucky as the Seltos stumbled 29%. The Niro, Sorento, and EV9 also saw year-over-year declines.
Despite the mixed results, Kia America reported their best-ever January sales as dealers moved 57,007 units last month. That was a 12% improvement from a year ago and the company noted five models set all-time sales records for January. They included the Carnival, K4/ Forte, Telluride, Sportage, and EV6.
The K4’s success isn’t much of a surprise as it sports a stylish design as well as an affordable price tag that starts at $21,990. Most variants are equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 147 hp (110 kW / 149 PS) and 132 lb-ft (179 Nm) of torque. However, the range-topping K4 GT-Line Turbo has a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder developing 190 hp (142 kW / 193 PS) and 195 lb-ft (264 Nm) of torque.
While K4 sales are being lumped together with the outgoing Forte, supplies are drying up. A quick search reveals less than 350 new units in inventory, so the model shouldn’t be around too much longer.
