• New Corvette buyer crashes car five minutes after purchase, skidding off the road.
  • The driver seemingly lost control in slippery conditions, sending the car into a ditch.
  • The sports car suffered a lot of damage to both the suspension and the bodywork.

Driving a powerful, rear-wheel-drive sports car in sub-zero conditions isn’t exactly a recipe for success—especially for young, inexperienced drivers. Yet, that’s exactly what unfolded in a bizarre incident in the U.S. recently, where a bright red C6 Chevrolet Corvette—freshly sold just moments before—ended up careening off the side of a motorway. The situation escalated fast, and not in the way anyone expected.

According to the seller who shared the story on a Reddit thread, the buyer had taken out a loan to purchase the Corvette and brought a check with him. The two were on their way to a nearby bank to cash it. However, things took a turn when the new owner pressed the throttle a little too enthusiastically. The car lost traction and slid off the road before crashing into a grassy embankment.

Dashcam footage from a car behind shows the moment the Corvette’s rear wheels lost grip. As the driver made a lane change, the car skidded uncontrollably, sliding sideways across the road before finally coming to a stop. Thankfully, no other vehicles were involved, but the car didn’t escape unscathed. It veered off the road and struck a number of trees, causing considerable damage.

The aftermath was not pretty. Multiple body panels were scratched or badly dented, and at least one front quarter panel was completely split in half. But the real concern is the potential suspension damage, which, based on the severity of the crash, could lead to hefty repair bills.

In the footage, one of the individuals (presumably the new owner) can be heard asking, “How much is that going to cost?” Someone quickly responds, saying, “Like $3k.” However, we suspect that repairing this Corvette will cost a lot more than that, particularly if panels need to be replaced or repaired.

This incident serves as a valuable reminder of the importance of caution when driving in slippery conditions, particularly if you’re behind the wheel of a high-powered vehicle not equipped with the appropriate tires. While rear-wheel-drive sports cars are a blast to drive, they can be unforgiving in harsh weather conditions.
