• 2023-2025 Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon models now feature strengthened roof panels.
  • Affected models can be dented during the high-pressure drying stage at a touchless car wash.
  • General Motors has issued a service bulletin to address the issue for customer-owned vehicles.

When you think of rugged pickup trucks like the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, you probably expect them to be tough, BEING able to take on whatever the world throws at them. So, it’s a bit of a shock to learn that since 2023, these GM trucks have had a rather odd problem: their roof panels are far too flexible, so much so that even a trip through a touchless car wash could leave dents. So, what exactly is going on here, and what’s GM doing to fix it?

Review: 2023 Chevrolet Colorado Proves Mid-Size Trucks Don’t Have To Suck

Many Colorado and Canyon owners have reported that the roof panels in their trucks flex during the high-pressure drying phase at car washes. It turns out the panels were so flexible that the drying jets were actually causing visible dents. As customer complaints piled up, GM quickly issued a service bulletin for the 2023 and newer models, announcing a fix for the problem and promising that no new Colorado and Canyon models will leave the factory with an embarrassingly flexible roof panel.

GM’s Fix: Stiffening the Roof, One Screw at a Time

To solve the issue, GM is adding stiffening patches to the underside of the roof panels. They’re also installing a metal bow running vertically across the underside of the roof, which is then held in place with five screws, structural adhesive, and rivets. Once this new support structure is in place, GM completes the fix by installing the headliner, GM Authority reported. Simple, but effective—at least, that’s the plan.

For anyone who owns a 2023-2025 Colorado or Canyon built before February 3, 2025, the good news is that you can have your roof strengthened, too. However, if your truck’s roof has already been damaged, say, from a dent caused by the high-pressure drying or other issues, you’ll need to get those repairs done first before the strengthening procedure can be applied.

Interestingly, there have been some reports among owners that roof panels are still susceptible to dents even after having the repairs made. If that’s the case, it’s a good idea to reach out to your local GM dealer for a closer look to see if there’s still an underlying issue that needs addressing.
