• VW and KONG have teamed up to release a limited edition dog toy inspired by the ID. Buzz.
  • The toy costs $13.99 and for each one purchased, another will be donated to an animal shelter.
  • KONG dog toys were inspired by the rubber axle stops on the 1960s Volkswagen Type 2 Bus.

A few years ago, we told our readers about Joe Markham and his German Shepherd named Fritz. Markham owned an automotive repair shop in downtown Denver and was working on a late 1960s Volkswagen Type 2 Bus, when he suddenly heard Fritz going crazy.

He went to investigate and saw the dog chewing on a bulbous axle stop, and having the time of his life. This turned out to be a great toy as the rubber was strong enough to endure repeated chewing, while also being soft enough not to damage Fritz’s teeth.

This sparked a six year journey, which saw Markham perfect the “rubber composition, size and shape” of what would become the KONG Classic Dog Toy. It was launched in 1976 and millions have been sold since then.

Volkswagen and KONG are now joining forces with a special edition dog toy inspired by the ID. Buzz. Designed to celebrate National Puppy Day and the shared history between the companies, the toy features an eye-catching cabana blue design and unique packaging. Only a limited number of units are available and pricing starts at $13.99 before taxes and a shipping fee of $8.95.

For every toy purchased, Volkswagen, KONG, and VCA Charities will donate another to a local shelter. Furthermore, 100% of the net proceeds will go to VCA Charities and its nationwide network of animal shelters.

That’s good news all around and Volkswagen’s Rachael Zaluzec said, “This collaboration carries forward KONG’s wonderful origin story that began with a man, his best friend, and a VW bus.” She added, “We’re delighted to partner with KONG and VCA Charities to extend this connection to those who need it most, ensuring that more dogs experience the love and joy they deserve.”
