The Pope’s Lamborghini Huracan Smashes Estimates, Sells For $861k

The unique Lamborghini Huracan delivered to Pope Francis has smashed pre-auction estimates and sold for $861,575 (€715,000) at RM Sotheby’s auction in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Prior to the auction, the Italian supercar was expected to sell for between $303,000 and $425,000, but bidders drove the final price significantly higher.

All of the proceeds from the sale will be delivered directly to various causes of the Pope’s choosing. Seventy per cent will go the besieged Iraqi city of Nineveh, 10 per cent to Amici per il Centrafrica Onlus, 10 per cent to Groupe International Chirurgiens Amis de la Main and 10 per cent to the Pope John XXIII Community Association.

Pope Francis was presented with the unique rear-wheel drive Huracan last year in a special ceremony at the Vatican.

The car comes from Lamborghini’s Ad Personam program and features a Bianco Monocerus paint contrasted by Giallo Tiberino stripes as a nod to the flag of Vatican City. The wheels of the car also turned heads: they feature black and silver elements and oddly-shaped spokes which immediately catch the eye. Inside, the car features Bianco Leda Sportivo leather alongside Lamborghini crests on the headrests.

Even though the Huracan sold for a pretty penny, a gift to the late Pope John Paul II, the 400th and final example of the Ferrari Enzo, fetched a staggering $6,050,000 at RM Sotheby’s 2015 Monterey auction.
