Back in January, Mercedes presented the all-new G500 at the Detroit Auto Show. One month later, it was followed by the beefier AMG 63 variant.
Fast forward to today, and the company still hasn’t expanded the offerings. But that’s about to change, however, as MercedesBenzPassionBlog reports that the SUV is ready to welcome a diesel.
Codenamed the OM 656, the six-cylinder unit is already used in the facelifted S-Class and new CLS, among other cars. It’s offered with two power outputs: 286PS (282hp / 210kW) and 600Nm (443lb-ft) of torque and 340PS (335hp / 250kW) and 700Nm (516lb-ft) of torque in the 350d and 400d versions, respectively.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class will reportedly adopt the 282hp version in the new G350d variant. The automaker claims an average fuel consumption of 5.8 l/100 km (49 UK mpg / 41 US mpg) in both the S350d and S400d. Yet, given that the SUV is heavier, we’re probably looking at 6+ l/100 km (47 UK mpg / 39 US mpg), officially at least.
The new Mercedes G350d will most likely cost less than the G500, which can be had from €107,040.50 ($125,960) in Germany. The petrol-powered model uses a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that makes 422PS (416hp / 310kW) and 609Nm (450lb-ft) of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.
As for the G63, it sits in a league of its own, with 585PS (577hp / 430kW) and 850Nm (627lb-ft) of torque, and a starting price of €148,434.65 ($174,672) in its home market.
