We haven’t heard much about Rivian Automotive since the company purchased a former Mitsubishi factory in Illinois but that’s changing today as the automaker has revealed plans to launch two electric vehicles.
In a promotional clip, Rivian says they’re creating “electric adventure vehicles” that can “get you to the mountain and back on a single charge.” The video goes on to say that in 2020, the company will launch two “premium” vehicles based on the same all-wheel drive platform.
One will be a five-passenger pickup, while the other will be a seven-passenger SUV. They will eventually be followed by “new options for how you drive, own and maintain your vehicle.”
While the video isn’t very informative, Engadget recently checked out the company. They’re reporting the pickup will be called the A1T, while the crossover will be named the A1C. Both models are slated to be unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show but it appears the crossover won’t be arrive until 2021.
While the models haven’t been unveiled yet, the company is already making some pretty lofty claims. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe says the A1T will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds, ford 3.6 feet (1 meter) of water and have more than 14.1 inches (360 mm) of ground clearance. He also said the truck will be “stiffer than a supercar.”
At lot of details haven’t been finalized but the base A1T will reportedly cost around $50,000 and have an 80 kWh battery pack that will provide approximately 200 miles (321 km) of range. The truck will also be pretty fast as Rivian says it will run from 0-60 mph in “less than five seconds.”
The range-topping A1T is slated to cost around $90,000 and it will have an electric powertrain that reportedly develops 800 hp (596 kW / 811 PS). The company also claims the truck will be able to travel around 450 miles (724 km) on a single charge.
The truck is said to be about the same size as the Honda Ridgeline but it has a more extreme design with “aggressive angles and big, blocky panels sitting atop the four meaty tires.”
