Hyundai launched the 2018 Elantra GT Stateside last year, and Consumer Reports have just got their hands on one.

Put through a few tests, the compact model was found to be quite fun to drive, with an almost hot hatch feel.

It’s no slouch, given that it’s powered by a 161 horsepower 2.0-liter GDI four-cylinder engine. The unit works together with a standard six-speed manual gearbox, but CR chose the optional six-speed auto instead.

The suspension is on the stiff side, but will absorb most bumps on the road quite easily. The Elantra GT has little body lean, and it’s nimble through corners.

Stepping inside reveals a cabin that “doesn’t feel cheap”, in the reviewer’s own words. There are some high quality materials throughout, the controls are easy to reach and use, and the front seats are comfortable and provide good support. Moreover, the 8-inch infotainment system, with smartphone integration, is offered at no extra cost.

Legroom on the rear bench is tight, and taller passengers will struggle to find a comfy position, but with the seats folded flat, the compact hatchback can carry large cargo, including a bicycle.

The 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT is also competitively priced, being offered from $20,250 with an automatic transmission. By comparison, that’s $290 less than what you would have to pay for the base Ford Focus.
