Toyota To Sell Suzuki-Developed Models In India And Africa

Following a partnership announcement last February, Toyota and Suzuki have now started discussions on joint projects in vehicle production, market development and technology solutions.

The first sign of the two companies’ collaboration is the mutual supply of cars for the Indian market, with more to follow.

Toyota and Suzuki are currently discussing the details for the development of an “ultrahigh-efficiency” powertrain. Toyota and Denso will provide technological support to Suzuki, with the latter appointed with the development of the said powertrain.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the company’s Indian arm, will produce models developed by Suzuki for sale in India, with the models to be available through both companies’ brand networks.

“As members of Indian society, Toyota, along with Suzuki, will do its best to enhance freedom and fun in a future society of mobility and to make “Make in India” vehicles cherished in Africa and in many other countries around the world”, said Toyota President Akio Toyoda.

“We will receive support for the development of a compact, ultrahigh-efficiency powertrain that is vital to Suzuki, and we will focus our utmost efforts on development”, said Suzuki Chairman Osamu Suzuki. “It is my hope that the new joint projects will contribute to the future success of both companies, not only in India, but also in the global market.”

Toyota and Suzuki are also planning to offer Suzuki-developed models outside India, including Africa and other markets, further expanding their cooperation in the fields of logistics and services.
