The first reviews of the 2019 Lexus ES are landing and the feedback is rather encouraging for the seventh generation of the popular Japanese model.

The new Lexus ES is also important because it will be the first of its name to be officially offered in Western and Central Europe, albeit only in the hybrid ES 300h version.

According to Lexus, the new ES 300h can deliver “exceptional fuel efficiency and responsive performance” thanks to its new, fourth generation self-charging hybrid drive system.

The new hybrid powertrain of the Lexus ES 300h combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that runs on the Atkinson cycle with a lighter and more compact electric motor. Lexus says that the combined output is 215hp (218PS) and its combined fuel economy is 60mpg UK (4.7lt/100km).

As ever, Lexus opted for a CVT transmission but now promises that the powertrain is designed to reduce the “rubber band” feel commonly associated with this type of gearboxes. There’s even a Sport mode that boosts torque in lower speeds for better acceleration, as well as six simulated gears than can be selected via paddle shifters.

F Sport models will be equipped with an adaptive suspension along with certain sporty touches in and out. Thanks to the adoption of the GA-K platform, Lexus says that the new ES represents a leap forward compared to its predecessors.
