A businessman has been killed and his female passenger critically injured after crashing a friend’s Ferrari California T into a road divider near Kolkata, India.

At around 9:30 am on June 4, 43-year-old Shibaji Roy was driving his friend’s California T in a convoy with a number of other exotics, including a Ferrari 488 Spider and Lamborghini Gallardo.

Times Of India reports that Roy suddenly swerved right to avoid a truck that abruptly slowed down in front of him. Police suspect that the move was made at high speed.

After narrowly avoiding the truck, the Italian sports car slammed into the guardrails of the Pakuria flyover and an iron rail from the bridge pierced the engine and struck Shibaji in the chest. Friends of the businessman say he was alive for about an hour after the impact but died shortly after.

Speaking about the incident, a relative of Shibaji said he was a father of a son and a key member of the family-owned sanitation and drainage solutions company.

“His father died two and a half years ago leaving the entire business on Shibaji and his brother’s shoulders. We will keep his body at a morgue for a day till his brother arrives from Croatia.”

The 19-year-old female passenger is in a critical condition with multiple fractures.

Police say they are investigating the crash to determine exactly what happened.

“We are probing all angles, including if the rider was over-speeding, or had to veer right because of a truck in front,” police revealed.
