Porsche’s parent company Volkswagen is collaborating with Daimler, BMW, and Ford on deploying a joint electric-vehicle charging network across Europe. But until that’s ready, Zuffenhausen has launched the new Porsche Charging Service.
The system networks with existing charging stations to provide drivers with information on suitable chargers available to juice up their plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles. It even manages the payment process, no matter the country or currency.
In fact, you don’t even need to be driving a Porsche to use it. The system is open to owners of any electrified plug-in vehicle from any manufacturer, and can be operated via a dedicated app available for either iPhone or Android. It’s launching first in select European markets: Germany (of course), but also Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, and the Netherlands. But plans are being worked out to introduce the system in other markets by the end of the year as well.
“In addition to fascinating vehicles, building a customer-friendly charging infrastructure is the key to achieving long-term success for electromobility,” said Porsche sales/marketing chief Detlev von Platen. “With the Porsche Charging Service, we are offering our customers a central digital platform that simplifies every aspect of the charging process. As a result, it is even easier to integrate charging into everyday life.”
Porsche already has plug-in hybrid versions of the Cayenne and Panamera available, and is working at bringing its Mission E electric vehicle concept to production as the Taycan. Expect other battery-powered Porsches to follow, and make use of all the charging stations the automaker can get its hands on – digitally or otherwise.
