While many start-up electric automakers are popping up in the United States, the UK remains the home of sports car start-ups, few more impressive than Elemental.

The brand’s first model, the RP1, may be a new player in this heavily-contested market but has already received rave reviews and been given similar high-praise to the BAC Mono. Now, the RP1 has become even more exciting, following the announcement that its downforce levels have been more than doubled.

Elemental called upon ex-McLaren Formula 1 aerodynamicist Mark Taylor to upgrade the RP1 and he has done just that, increasing downforce at 150 mph (241 km/h) from 400 kg to an incredible 1000 kg (2,200 lbs), easily eclipsing the 600 kg of downforce generated by the McLaren P1.

To deliver these dramatic improvements, the RP1 has been fitted with a towering rear wing, a new front splitter and revised diffuser.

Speaking with Autocar, Taylor said “When Elemental asked me to take a look at the car, straight away I could see there was bags of potential. I could see that it would be easy to double the 400kg figure.”

It’s not yet known when the aerodynamic package will be added to the RP1 range or how much it will cost. Whatever the answer, it will make the track toy even more capable.
