Aside from poor weather, speed tends to be the factor that’s most damaging to cars racing around the Nordschleife.

What we have here appears to be another case of carrying too much speed into a corner, which doesn’t seem to be something you’d do if you really knew the track.

Still, the driver of this Fiesta ST runs straight into the wall on the right side of the track, from where he actually does remarkably well to keep it on the circuit. Had he just let go of the steering wheel and let momentum do its thing, the Fiesta could have ended up spinning onto the grass and into the opposite wall.

The second camera angle shows by how much the driver misjudged that corner. Even if he had somehow miraculously kept the car under control, he still wouldn’t have made the apex of the following corner.

Luckily, despite the speed with which the car hit the wall, the angle of the impact helped with keeping the damage to a minimum, as far as we can see, of course.
