Presented to media, distributors and key fleet customers in Dubai, the latest Ram model to join the lineup is a familiar face with a new name; the 1200 pickup truck for the Middle East.
The Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) group avoided mentioning it in its press release, but you don’t need a magnifying glass to see that the RAM 1200 is based on the latest Mitsubishi L200. In fact, it’s the group’s second L200-based model after the Fiat-branded Fullback pick up truck that was introduced last year.
In RAM disguise, the commercial model is 1,775 mm tall (69.88 in), 1,785 mm (70.27 in) wide and has a 3,000 mm (118.11 in) wheelbase. Depending on the selected version – Single Cab or Double Cab – its length varies between 5,245 mm (206.5 in) and 5,370 mm (211.42 in).
Billed as a metric ton pickup truck, it has a maximum payload capacity of 1,165 kg (2,568 lbs) and it can tow up to 3 metric tons (6,614 lbs). Power comes from two engines: a 2.5-liter diesel with 126 HP or 134 HP, and a 2.4-liter petrol, rated at 130 HP. Both units come with a standard manual gearbox, and an optional automatic transmission.
Ram has yet to release full details and a full image gallery of the new 1200, but states that the entry-level versions will come with rear-wheel drive, while better equipped models will benefit from all-wheel drive featuring an Electronic Selector with three driving modes. The first one known as 2H engages RWD for optimal loads, the second one is the 4H, used at speeds of up to 100 km/h (62 mph), distributing traction to all four corners for unpaved roads, and the third, named 4L, offers low-range gearing for off-road conditions.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will launch the new Ram 1200 in selected markets across the Middle East next year, with pricing to be announced.
