This latest comparison chart from H&H Classic Parts pits the new 2017 Camaro 1SS against the classic 1967 Camaro SS 396.

The chart was put together in order to celebrate the Camaro’s 50th anniversary, and at the same time reveal what an increase in both weight as well as price means for the newer car when compared to a vehicle that weighs 360 lbs (163 kg) less.

“In many ways, the 67 Camaro SS 396 is beyond comparison,” says Tray Smith, VP of H&H Classic Parts. “The first Camaro’s combination of style and performance are irresistible to classic Chevy enthusiasts like myself. The 2017 Camaro SS is definitely impressive, but it comes at a hefty price.”

Despite the roughly $13,500 price hike, the newer car is considerably quicker, which means performance-oriented buyers could easily justify the price tag to themselves – after all, we are talking about a 2.5-second difference in 0 to 60 times and a 2.2-second difference in 1/4 mile times.

The 2017 Camaro 1SS will hit the 60 mph (96 km/h) mark in 4.0 seconds flat, whereas the 67 SS needs 6.5 seconds. The newer model will also run a 1/4 mile in 12.3 seconds, whereas the classic muscle car would require around 14.5 seconds.

Advantage goes to the modern-day Camaro also when it comes to braking distance from 60 mph – with it needing just 117 feet (36 meters) to come to a complete stop, unlike the older car which would need somewhere around 250 feet (76 meters).

As for fuel economy, Smith finds the comparison fascinating, saying that “when tuned correctly and running right, it was possible to get mid teens gas mileage with a ’67 back in the day, but today’s car has fuel injection, computerized engine management, and 8 gears in the transmission. While the new car makes substantially more power than the ’67 model – and the new car is heavier – the relatively small increase in gas mileage over the last 50 years was a surprise.”
