The Albanian Police Force has become just the fifth police department in Europe to add all-electric models to its vehicle fleet, following an announcement by the country’s interior minister Saimir Tahiri.
Tahiri yesterday confirmed that a host of Volkswagen e-Golfs have been delivered to the police force and that soon, they will be hitting the streets. Unfortunately, there’s a small catch.
Albania doesn’t currently have a recharging network at any fuel stations or around any of its major cities, meaning the electric hatchbacks will have to return to their respective police stations whenever they need some extra juice.
For a new electric vehicle like the Chevrolet Bolt or updated Renault Zoe, that isn’t a disaster as the cars can travel almost 400 km (248 miles) on a single charge. The e-Golf on the other hand has a range of between 130 and 190 km (80-118 miles), meaning police will have to recharge them quite frequently.
In July, both the Austrian and Romanian police forces took delivery of BMW i3s, joining Italy in the list of countries that use the German firm’s electric hatchback in their law enforcement agencies’ fleets.
