A Rolls-Royce has long been the chosen mode of transportation for the rich and famous. But if we had to pick the single most famous automobile ever to fly the Spirit of Ecstasy, it would surely be The Yellow Rolls-Royce. And whether on purpose or otherwise, the company’s Bespoke division has revived the film car’s livery with this custom coupe.
Based on the Wraith fastback, this bespoke vehicle is, as you can see, decked out in yellow, with a dark grey metallic hood and roof, and polished-fascia alloys. The theme continues inside with black leather offset by yellow accents – and of course Rolls’ signature Starlight Headliner with pinhead LEDs arrayed to emulate the constellations.
The car emulates the namesake star of the film The Yellow Rolls-Royce. The 1964 movie centers around a 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II and follows the lives of three of its owners: the wife of an English aristocrat, an Italian mobster, and a wealthy American widow in Yugoslavia. Alongside the yellow Phantom, the film starred Rex Harrison, Ingrid Bergman and Omar Sharif, among other big draws of the time.
The film didn’t perform spectacularly well at the box office. Compared to Mary Poppins that came out the same year and grossed $28.5 million (in 1965 money) at the box office, The Yellow Rolls-Royce, despite its star-studded cast, netted only $5.4 million. But its legacy – among Rolls-Royces especially – appears to have lived on.
