The next-generation Volkswagen Touareg appears to have been spied testing for the very first time.

While the identity of the test mule is impossible to fully confirm, all indications point towards it being the new Touareg, complete with a selection of distinctive elements from the current model.

Most significantly, the car pictured appears slightly smaller than the existing Touareg and the wing mirrors have also been mounted in a new location on the front doors. Additionally, the lack of camouflage across the sides reveal an all-new design somewhat reminiscent of the Bentley Bentayga, the world’s fastest and most expensive SUV.

Underpinning the new model will be the same platform as the Bentayga and Audi Q7 as well as the next-generation Porsche Cayenne. This means that we can expect a range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains, likely very similar to those littered throughout the Volkswagen Group.

As camouflage covers the front and rear fascias, little can be said about the model’s updated styling in these areas.

However, the lack of camo or any outlandish cladding across the entire car suggests that development could be quite progressed, indicating that a debut sometime in 2017 is possible.
