VW is working on the next generation of their CC four-door coupe, with our spies spotting an early development tester being benchmarked against a BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe.

While the body remains under camouflage, you can already spot features like the longer roof line and the higher shoulders while the new LED front headlights will offer a very distinctive and upmarket lightning signature as seen in the photos.

The Germans want the CC to feel and look more expensive than it really is and that theme is expected to continue with the new model. The final production car will be heavily influenced by the 2015 Sport Coupe Concept GTE which impressed with its clean, yet dynamic design.

Features like the frameless doors will be preserved while the exhaust pipes will be nicely integrated into the rear bumper. As for the interior, customers will be able to choose between a four-seat and five-seat configurations.

Based on the same underpinnings with the current Passat sedan, the new CC will be offered pretty much with the same engines, which in Europe translates into getting a wide range of petrol and diesel engine options and in the US, into a pair of petrol units only – at least during launch. Whether VW will add electrified powertrains to the CC’s lineup remains to be seen.

The new VW CC will continue to be the same car on both sides of the Atlantic, unlike the Passat which features a different design for the North American region.
